Give every agent an owner in Entra

Entra Agent ID makes the agent a governed identity. Production still needs a sponsor, least privilege, and a decision record.

An abstract identity mark inside a circular boundary, with a coral ownership line

Microsoft Entra Agent ID is generally available. It gives an AI agent its own identity in Entra: a human sponsor, a blueprint that carries permissions and Conditional Access, and sign-in and audit logs that name the agent. Microsoft recommends a dedicated agent identity, with a sponsor, rather than a service principal or an ordinary user account. If the sponsor leaves, sponsorship transfers so the agent is not orphaned.

Agent 365 is the control plane on that identity. Copilot Studio agents register automatically. Foundry agents can sync into the same registry once Agent 365 is enabled, so administrators can see agents across the tools that built them.

Identity is the container

The identity does not decide what the agent is for. SHIFT to SCALE still names the operating model around it.

  • A sponsor for the agent, and a named approver for what it is allowed to do
  • Least-privilege scopes for retrieval and for actions
  • A sandbox blueprint kept apart from the production blueprint
  • An audit trail that maps to the same decision record as the Workflo
  • A review cadence, so access ends when the job ends

Entra can enforce the boundary from day one. Someone in the business still owns the decision inside it.
